How to Listen to Classical Music

Enhancing your Understanding and Appreciation
 an interactive workshop

Tuesday 24 June 2025

785 Chemin de Peire Luche, 06330 Roquefort Les Pins

Understanding Classical music requires certain perceptual skills - techniques for listening out for key elements that enable us to understand what the composers were trying to communicate. Once acquired, these skills can greatly enhance our understanding and appreciation of music.
Aaron Copland believed that there are three levels of listening to music: the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the musical plane. There are also the fascinating aspects of interpretation, and the information behind each composition: the composer's era, geographical location, and personal story, the structure of the work, and why it was composed.
